Perthshire is famed not only for it lush green scenery and hills but its vast array of beautiful wildlife.    Step outside the Lodge and walk across the river bridge and keep going and you’ll soon encounter deer and birds of prey.   But for more “guaranteed” sightings and the opportunity to see wildlife close up, here are some suggestions ….

Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre, Comrie  (10 miles away) www.auchingarrich.co.uk

Now if you’d like to see a gorgeous real otter (!) and discover 50 different species of animals – the Auchingarrich is a fun family day out and great for children to interact and learn all about them and their feeding habits etc.   With both Exotic and Farm animals – there is also Fly Fishing (and instruction) available too.

Blair Drummond Safari Park,  Stirling

Sea lions, elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers, monkeys, meerkats….. Otters!!    Blair Drummond is a veritable A – Z of exotic animals.   A full day experience and great for adults and kids alike.    Face-painting and a Funfair – you’ll be exhausted by the time you get back.    Check out the website first and plan your day ahead.

You choose the ‘Safari’ option that suits you best and explore this awe-inspiring area.  Armed with cameras and binoculars, you climb aboard your Land Rover and journey to the high tops through a land, sculptured by the elements, and steeped in history, culture, nature and breathtaking views – and with no shortage of photo opportunities!

To guarantee getting up close to wildlife, don’t miss the Red Deer and Barn Owl Encounter. From the Red Deer Barn, stroke, feed and photograph these magnificent and iconic animals in the company of a knowledgeable Safari Ranger who will tell you about their fascinating life cycle, likes, dislikes, habits and personalities. Meet and encounter their Barn Owl in a hands-on demonstration and have fun learning the secrets of this beautiful and captivating “phantom” bird of the night.

They also have a really nice cafe - showcasing local produce and a delightful shop where you can buy gifts you won’t find on the high street.  Best to plan / book ahead.

Lots of other activities for children too – indoor play barn and soft barn, outdoor playpark, mini golf, table tennis, football, mini tractor circuit, pony rides, animal feeding, milking (!), hatching (and handling) of baby chicks and baby animals.  

And coffee and seats for adults!
